The Nutcracker, Clara, Pantaloon, Trudy and Marie arrive at the Land of Dolls on flying swans, passing forests of Christmas trees and arriving at a palace made of sweets. Once they are there, Pantaloon is cured. The Nutcracker is given a royal welcome as the Prince of the Dolls amid many cheering toys. Clara shares a romantic dance with the Nutcracker, who takes her by the hand and gets down on one knee. He then asks her to stay with him and be his princess. Clara is ready to embrace her childhood fantasies and her beloved companion but sadly refuses; she wishes she could, but the adventures of growing up and her family are still waiting for her. The dolls start to turn back into inanimate toys, and a dying Mouse King suddenly arrives for one last chance at revenge. The Nutcracker tries to save her, but slowly turns back into a toy himself. Clara tries to keep the Mouse King at bay, but he corners her on a balcony. As he strikes, he falls off the castle to his death in the river below, almost taking Clara with him. Clara pulls herself back up and finds the castle is completely abandoned. She tearfully cries out for her Nutcracker as mist fills the lonely palace.
Running time is approximately 90 minutes with one intermission. This ballet is recommended for all adults and children aged 4 and older. Generally, if your child can pay attention to a full-length movie in a cinema, they will probably be able to enjoy the show.

The holiday season has begun, but like many other things this year, it is a mere shadow of its former self. That's why I was so pleased when one of my readers referred me to an animated version of "The Nutcracker" that I had missed during my childhood. The Nutcracker Prince is by far the most accurate version of E.T.A. Hoffmann's "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" that I have ever seen. After my overwhelming disappointment with Disney's The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, I thought that the Barbie movie was the closest I'd ever get to an accurate feature based on this classic fairy tale. I was wrong. The Nutcracker Prince is an animated film released in 1990 with a surprisingly impressive cast of voice talent. Sadly, there's no chance of seeing it on Disney+ any time soon because it was distributed by Warner Brothers, one of the only major film studios that Disney does not own (yet). However, it is free to watch on YouTube for those of you in need of some holiday princess cheer.
If you are looking for something pretty and cheerful to get into the right mood this holiday season, look no further than The Nutcracker Prince. This classic story has never been portrayed quite as accurately and creatively as it was in this 1990 film, when animation was at its peak. If this movie leaves you craving an opportunity to somehow magically transport yourself to a theater to see the ballet during the lockdown, you are in luck. The New Paltz Ballet Theater will be streaming a live performance of it on YouTube starting November 24th. It will be available until New Year's Day, so don't miss your chance to enjoy this holiday princess classic! Happy holidays, everyone!
Who can crack the nut? Only Hans can, for which the mouse queen, before she meets her demise, casts another spell that turns Hans into a nutcracker doll. The mouse queen is succeeded by her loutish son, the new mouse king, who vows to make splinters out of this nutcracker prince.
Back in the present, Clara gets up during the middle of the night to play with her nutcracker prince doll. Drosselmeier appears as an apparition and, with a bit of magic, makes all the dolls come alive, who prepare to do battle with the advancing mice. The nutcracker prince rallies the troops. Firing corks and marbles, the mouse king is driven away.
On Christmas morning, however, the mouse king reappears, still wanting to exact revenge on the nutcracker prince. Clara calls out to Drosselmeier for help, and he again appears to re-animate the toys. The battle is enjoined once more, only this time Drosselmeier shrinks Clara down to doll size, so that she can join the other dolls in taking a wounded soldier into the magic castle where he can be restored.

Then, during the anual Christmas party, the mysterious family friend, Drosselmeier, tells her a story about a young man named Hans who rescued a princess under a spell by the Mouse Queen and her whining son. As punishment for his good deed, the Mouse Queen managed to transform Hans into a nutcracker (prince of the dolls) before her death; the same nutcracker Drosselmeier gives to Clara that day. When midnight comes, Clara finds herself trapped in the middle of a battle between the mice and her toys being lead by the confused nutcracker. If the prince of the dolls can defeat the Mouse King and win the hand of a fair maiden, it can break the curse upon him. However, Clara must chose between the dreamworld of her new companion and his adventures or her real world where the dreams and adventures of growing up still await her.
We're going to watch 'The Nut Cracker' at seven thirty this evening", I informed the kids. "Is it a movie?" asked my five year old daughter. "No, it's a ballet production". Her eyes lit up, "Can I wear my ballet costume then?" she asked me hopefully. I didn't have the heart to tell her that wearing a ballet costume might not be ideal attire for the evening but luckily I was spared having to answer as her siblings intervened with a chorus of, "Nooo!" At the tender age of five, ballet to my youngest consisted of little girls wearing pretty pink tutus and twirling and pirouetting. I think the concept of The English National Ballet performing The Nut Cracker which is a fantasy ballet based on a fairy tale written by E.T.A. Hoffman in the early Nineteenth Century and being performed to Tchaikovsky's score was really lost on her. However all three kids seemed to be rather excited at the thought of a family outing especially if it meant they could stay up late.
As I poured over the programme, I tried to tell my youngest the story of the Nut Cracker. It tells the tale of Christmas celebrations at Clara and Fritz Stahlbaum's home with family and friends. Clara's godfather, Mr. Drosselmeyer, makes magical toys and he entertains the guests with two life-sized dolls that dance around the room. Then he gives out gifts to the children, and gives Clara a very special gift of a nutcracker. Her brother, Fritz, is exceedingly jealous, and grabs the nutcracker and breaks it! Naturally Clara is upset, so Mr. Drosselmeyer repairs the doll before handing it back to her. After all the guests leave and everyone is asleep, Clara gets up in the night and goes downstairs to get her nutcracker from under the tree. Soon she falls asleep there, and is transported into a magical fantasy where her nutcracker has grown to the size of a human. Here we find the Mouse King who attacks the Nutcracker Prince who in turn tries to valiantly defend young Clara, but is injured in the battle. Clara manages to defeat the Mouse King by throwing her shoe at him! With the Mouse King out of the way, she saves the Nut Cracker Prince by kissing him which miraculously makes him human! Then she and her Prince are whisked away through the Enchanted Forest, where they see dancing snowflakes and other wonders. Then they travel further to the Kingdom of the Sweets. In the Kingdom of Sweets, Clara and the Prince behold the extraordinary beauty of the Sugarplum Fairy. She invites the couple to stay for a while and enjoy the entertainment of her subjects. Clara and the prince watch in awe as the inhabitants of the Kingdom of Sweets dance before them. When the dancers are finished, Clara and her Prince sail home in a magic sleigh made of ice and candy. On Christmas morning, Clara wakes under the tree holding her nutcracker doll. The End.
