A team of scientists based in Greenland has had three major breakthroughs in the past two years. The first, stemming from their research on climate-change mitigation, proved that precipitation is not necessary for growth of trees. The second brought to light new species of algae that are capable of removing more nitrogen from an environment than any previously reported species. Finally, they have had success with the development of a system that harvests CO2. The team is working with partners across Greenland to develop locally owned opportunities for trade and export, building capacity through education and training programs at all levels for its people. The project is bringing together local communities, international experts, national and local government partners, and the private sector to establish a new, green economy. It is also closely linked to the defense of Greenland's strategic interests. The territory of Nunavut (Canada) covers about 1/4 of Greenland's territory with what is called the Nares Strait. This area is occupied by the American military and their "Nanook" exercises call for simulated attacks on Greenland's hydroelectric power stations that provide energy for all Danish mainland. The authorities in Nuuk (capital of Greenland) are working with Washington to create new military training areas with an emphasis on operating in snow-covered landscapes. Narsaq, a coastal town in southern Greenland, capital of the Qeqqata municipality with a population of 3.500 people, is one of those involved in the project. In April 2011, an international conference on Energy and Climate Change was held in this town to focus on ways to use clean energy as an opportunity to develop Greenland's economy and create jobs. An Energy Commission was established to work on a way forward at the policy level and a project-management group to facilitate local leadership for community-based projects. As soon as the global climate change issue came up, Denmark established five regional centers for integrated research to enable local communities to explore opportunities. Narsaq was selected as the site for one of these centers, located at the Qullissat Research Station. The objective is to build capacity in Greenland for green energy development, therefore improving life standards and building resilience against possible challenges that may arise from an unstable future. The project has already created important connections between Greenlandic communities and the Danish government now allows young people who finish high school early (aged 17) to postpone their conscription; instead they can receive training in industries like alternative energy. One of the projects implemented in Narsaq is an ambitious wind-power installation that will be able to produce 1 MWh per year, enough to power about 1/2 of the town's needs. The aim is to produce 10,000 MWh per year by 2020. The program has reached Nunalleq (the largest town in the Sermersooq municipality), another site for the Greenlandic energy center. Through this project, students aged 16-18 can choose to take part in an educational program that offers training for jobs related to energy conservation and wind power installations, as well as among other things, teaching them how to use computer technology which has recently become necessary for their development. eccc085e13
